Why is mental health awareness so important?

May is nationally recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, which has been observed since 1949. Mental health is something that should always be prioritized, and having a month dedicated to it can help inform others about its importance. During the month of May, numerous organizations across America strive to share information to help prevent stigma and provide support to those who are affected by mental health conditions.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), by sharing our lived experiences and building strong community connections, we can challenge stigma and create spaces where people are supported, understood, and find healing.

Highlighting the importance of mental health awareness and normalizing conversations about mental health encourages people to share with others and seek help to improve their mental wellbeing. When people share their personal stories or experiences it gives others the opportunity to connect and recognize similarities. This can help people know they are not alone in their journey and can guide them in identifying the steps they need to take going forward.

How can I help support?

Start conversations. Check in with your friends and family and interact with your community. Listen to their needs and find ways to help support and encourage them in their mental wellbeing. Practice active listening, ask them what kind of support they need in that moment. Doing this can encourage a support system where all different sides are able to be there for each other in times of need.

Research and educate. Growing your knowledge of mental health can help you educate others as well. When you have conversations with others about their mental wellbeing it can help you understand their needs and why they feel the way they do. It can also help reduce stigma and encourage openness within communities, while also aiding in recognizing the signs of when others may need help.

Share and participate. Consider attending local events or fundraisers that help spread awareness about mental health. Share resources on your social media account and send them to friends and family, whether that be tips on managing stress or personal testimonies from others or yourself, you never know what could empower those who are reading.
